5 Tips To Help You Prepare for Autumn
Before we dive into our tips for making a smooth transition into Autumn, we hope you had a wonderful summer, made the most of the warmer weather, longer days and sunshine, and took a bit of time to recharge for the second half of the year. As September rolls around, that ‘back to school’ feeling (however old we are!) can make it seem as though we have so much to get done, whether professionally or personally. All of a sudden the calming and comfortable summer lull is long forgotten and it’s Go! Go! Go! With that in mind, we wanted to share a few tips for staying mindful as we shift our focus this month while also maintaining energy levels.
Aside from wrapping up in cosy layers, warm up from the inside out. We love starting our day with warm water and a squeeze of fresh lemon to get things moving. Swap cold smoothies for porridge and salads for soups, stews and curries. Make a shift from raw veggies to steamed greens and root vegetables which are coming into season at this time of year. Also think about including spices which add heat to your meals like cayenne, cloves and cinnamon. For some autumn food inspiration, check out our favourite recipes for this time of year.
Whether it’s because of the brighter mornings or because you’re conscious of dressing for sunny days, many of us are more motivated to exercise in the summer months. However, we all need to move on a daily basis no matter what time of year it is. Don’t let your fitness routine fall by the wayside, even if all you can manage on busy days is to take yourself outside the office for a brisk walk to enjoy some fresh air and a sense of vitality!
Keep your immune system in check
We’re all more susceptible to colds, infections and allergies at this time of year, so supporting our immune system is a great way to keep the body’s natural defences up. As our gut is the centre of immunity, supporting digestion is also of great importance, so ensure you’re including fermented, probiotic and prebiotic-rich foods in your diet. Think things like kombucha, kefir and sauerkraut. Bone broth is also an autumn staple in our kitchens – more on why we love it here! We also love Chaga for its immune-boosting properties (find it on our H+H shop) and another key ingredient is ginger, which is antimicrobial and helps to relieve congestion.
Colder weather and central heating can make our skin, hair and nails feel extra dry and lacklustre at this time of year. Before thinking about lathering up with oils, serums and creams, give dry body brushing a go. It will stimulate circulation and help exfoliate away summer’s dry skin so that your moisturiser is more effective. When it comes to what we put on our skin, we like to keep it natural. Organic almond or coconut oil works wonders, but for something a bit fancier, check out our favourite beauty and body products here. Oh, and don’t forget that staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water has a huge impact on the skin too!
It’s easy to fall into a slump post-summer, amplified by shorter days and less sunshine, but being kind to yourself and staying positive is our number one tip! Summer is such an outdoor-focused season, but making sure you get out enough in Autumn is just as important, especially so we can soak up some all important Vitamin D. Journaling, meditating, focusing on self-care and staying social helps keep us feeling positive.
